Summoner: The Novice Wikia

Battle Spells are made by using mana, they are commonly used on the battlefield by human Battlemages and orc shamans. They are made by "etching" symbols known as "glyphs."

As a rule of thumb, the higher/bigger the demon's fulfillment level/size is, the higher the demon's mana level will be. A Raiju has unusually high mana levels, even though it is small and only level five. Mana level can be increased over time, but this is a very rare occurrence. An example of increasing mana levels is during a Golem's growth. If a summoner has more than one demon both demon's mana levels combine to make the summoner's. When experienced summoners enter the ether, they can merge mana in order to keep the portal open for longer, but this is very hard to do, and not normally necessary.

An interesting ability discovered by Fletcher Wulf in his reminiscing among the memories of his salamander, Ignatius, is that, by tattooing a summoner's hand, they are then able to completely skip the process of etching, simply by blasting mana through their tattooed finger.

Main Spells[]

These spells are learned during a students first year of Vocans, since they are "Battle Spells" and Hominum is at war.

Appearance
The Telekinesis symbol has two arms that swirl around each other and occasionally overlap.

Effect
Considered the most useful of battle spells, it is often used in emergencies to blast aside opponents in a wasteful but effective attack. Summoners who are particularly adept are able to move objects, creating a lasso of sorts to do so.

Appearance
The Lightning symbol is a zig-zag shape with only two bends.

Effect
This spell is most commonly used to tackle multiple opponents, since it is capable of jumping between foes. However, it will only kill when a great amount of mana is used, otherwise simply stunning the enemy.

Appearance
The Shield Spell has three thin arms which are bent to make a triangle shape.

Effect
One of the most versatile battlemage spells, the shield spell is difficult to master. It can protect against enemy spells, projectiles and melee weapons, but it's durability is determined by thickness. Demons can destroy shields with the slightest touch, however. The shield is able to be reabsorbed into the body, or repaired.

Other Spells[]

Appearance
The barrier glyph has three evenly spaced prongs, with a circle in the middle. Each prong has two slightly bent lines on either side, and at the end it splits off, and then bends twice to curve inwards.

Effect
This spell protects the skin from being cut, like a very flexible shield coating the body. Like most spells, it is ineffective against demons. Blunt-force damage still reaches the user. The spell is so complex it takes four summoners to create it effectively. Hominum's kings often use this spell.

Appearance
It appears as an open triangle with one side facing the right. It has three crescent shaped lines curving towards it that increase in size.

Effect
Most often used by officers to increase their voices to give orders to their men, which must be balanced so the enemy does not hear. The spell has also been recently used to allow scrying crystals to make sound through vibration.

Mana Cost

Symbol Complexity

Difficulty to Master

3/10

Appearance
It is similar to the Amplify spell, except the three crescent lines are curving away from it.

Effect
Makes the surrounding area quiet, if not completely silent. It is most often used on night raids to avoid detection, but is also used in Vocans classrooms when students are unruly.

Appearance
The Growth symbol is shaped like a leaf with a stem. It includes three lines on either side of the central line to look like the veins of the leaf.

Effect
Allows a plant or an animal to grow quickly. However, it uses a lot of mana. It has very few practical applications, one of which being to grow the Medusa plant.

Appearance
This spell is symmetrical. It has a circle in the lower centre. There are two lines that resemble the outline of the tip of a sword that begins in the circle, then points downwards before moving up the "blade."

Effect
Sometimes confused with the berserk spell, but is only useful on non-organic matter. It is used to strengthen blades and armor, to prevent chipping or shattering. However, it is considered a waste in battle, and is only used in tournaments when a companion summoner is able to lend mana.

Appearance
Five lines that resemble waves that are stacked on top of each other make up this spell.

Effect
This spell is almost never used due to complexity, high cost and relatively useless applications. It draws moisture from the air to create mist. The size, shape and longevity is determined by the skill of the summoner and the humidity of the environment. It can be used to create clean drinking water in a survival situation, but is an emergency measure due to the mana cost.

Appearance
The frost symbol is shaped like a snowflake. It has six branches. Each branch has three lines curling towards the centre on each side.

Effect
This spell is most effective in humid or wet environments, turning the moisture into ice. However, it can also be used in dry conditions, able to freeze and shatter an orc's limb with enough mana.

Appearance
This glyph is shaped like a canine-tooth-shaped blade. The handle of it is shaped like a backwards 7.

Effect
This spell is an emergency measure, creating a solid white double-edged sword of sorts. It fixes around the hand that was used to cast it. However, it easily shatters, and is useless against demons.

6/10

Appearance
This glyph is shaped similar to a spiral, except for a part where it reverses direction. There are small curved lines branching off at random points.

Effect
First found in the Enenra demon, it is occasionally used in battle when the situation is appropriate. This spell literally plunges an area into darkness, hiding those within from sight. This is only effective at night, since during the day it does not completely obscure those within and the strange effect draws attention.

Appearance
This glyph is mostly triangular. It has a central line, with two triangles connected to it at the bottom, then a similar shape in the middle, except it doesn't fully join. At the top, there is a small version of the middle section.

Effect
The berserk spell is extremely dangerous and should only be used in dire circumstances. The caster will gain boundless energy and strength, its duration and potency determined by the amount of mana used. However, once the spell has finished, the summoner will become exhausted, possibly causing them to go unconscious or even die. The amount used is hard to regulate, and it is recommended that summoners train with a companion.

Appearance
This glyph has a vertical oval as it's centre. There is a cross within the oval that extends up past it. There are two lightning-bolt shaped symbols that point towards the centre of the oval. There are small lines around the end of the bolt closest to the oval.

Effect
Due to the healing spell fixing most injuries, this spell is rarely taught. It has a high mana cost, which makes it a poor long-term solution. If mana is not needed, a summoner can use this spell for temporary pain relief.

Appearance
The detect life glyph has a central line with two lines in an I shape. It intersects an upside down teardrop shape which connects into a sort of curved triangle, mimicking a head and torso.

Effect
Typically used by veteran summoners when hunting in the ether, this spell is rarely taught due to the difficulty. When cast on a living thing, that individual will be able to see nearby living creatures with a yellow glow. This effect typically lasts thirty seconds, but can be useful on night watch when the cat's-eye spell will not suffice.

Appearance
The Tighten Knot symbol is shaped like a knot. It resembles a wide pretzel.

Effect
Typically used by lazy summoners to tie their laces or used on ships during strong winds, this spell can also be useful in conjunction with the ethereal threads spell.

Appearance
This spell's glyph is shaped similar to a horseshoe, except the ends are more squiggly.

Effect
This spell is the exact opposite of the tighten knot spell. This spell has saved a few summoner's lives, allowing them to escape when being held captive. Unfortunately due to the focus on the four primary battle spells, novice summoners forget this spell, even when it could help them escape.

Appearance
The Unlock symbol is described as being keyhole-shaped. Specifically, a rounded part at the top, with an open triangular part at the bottom.

Effect
The origin of this spell is unknown. Nevertheless, it is in the most ancient spellbooks and has led to summoners using bars to keep their doors secure, since this spell does not work on those.

Appearance
The Ethereal Threads glyph is similar to a spiderweb. It has five main evenly spaced strands, with three strands connecting them all.

Effect
Found within an Arach, a sticky, gossamer-like substance can be ejected from a summoner's fingers and used to ensnare opponents. However, it will eventually dissolve. The usefulness of this spell has some arguing that it should be one of the first spells a novice summoner learns.

Appearance
The Glyph for the Cat's Eye spell is shaped like a cat's eye. Specifically, a circle with a thin vertical oval inside.

Effect
This spell produces a yellow light that must be shone directly into the user's retinas. The summoner's eyes will turn feline in appearance, and gives the summoner far better vision. This spell is typically used for seeing in the dark, but is not restricted to it.
